Estimation of risk factors for COVID-19 mortality - preliminary results
Objectives: To estimate the odds ratio for mortality due to COVID-19 adjusted for the presence of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and cancer, and also baseline characteristics such as age and gender. A way to determine the risk of each particular patient given his characteristics is presented.
Setting: Public data from the China outbreak of COVID-19 was used, which include 31 provinces.
Participants: No patients were directly included in this study since data were collected from published work. The data included 44672 subjects.
Primary and secondary outcome measures: the primary outcome measured was mortality rate from COVID-19.
Results: Odds ratio (OR) for 60 years or older patients is 18.8161 (CI95%[7.1997; 41.5517]) and 1.8518 (CI95%[1.5996; 2.1270]) for males. OR for cardiovascular disease is 12.8328 CI95%[10.2736; 15.8643] and 7.7925 (CI95%[5.5446; 10.4319]) for respiratory disease.
Conclusions: Age is the variable that presents higher risk of COVID-19 mortality. Regarding comorbidities, cardiovascular disease appears to be the riskiest, along with chronic respiratory disease . Males are more likely to die from COVID-19.
