Measuring Icebergs: Using Different Methods to Estimate the Number of COVID-19 Cases across the World

The different national governments have problems evaluating the reach of the current coronavirus epidemic, often having limited resources and tests at their disposal. Hence, any means to evaluate the number of persons with symptoms compatible with COVID-19 with reasonable level of accuracy is useful.

The CoronaSurveys project is a collaborative endeavour from several universities and research institutions. Data about COVID-19 cases is collected via anonymous open surveys. No personal data or health status is required form participants, they are only asked to report the proportion of cases known to them. With sufficient answers we are able able to produce estimates on the overall rate of infection. We also provide for all countries a case estimate based on available mortality data, sourced from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
